Elle Woods said it best: “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands; they just don't!” Working out is one of the keys to feeling your best, and while it may not prevent mariticide, it can improve your mood, memory, and stress levels. Plus, who wouldn’t want to wear a cute matching workout set?
But let's face it, the gym isn't everyone’s cup of tea. It can be daunting and overwhelming, especially for newbies. If you're in a slump and want to kickstart your fitness journey, we have a suggestion: workout classes. They offer a range of benefits and can be perfect for those shying away from intimidating solo gym sessions. While Pilates is currently in the limelight, it's just one of the many styles of classes you can explore, especially in New York City. Here are four classes to consider if you're starting a fitness routine this summer.
SoulCycle
SoulCycle isn’t some unknown secret spot. In fact, it is one of the most popular spin classes in New York. But it is famous for a reason. According to Byrdie, “All classes are an aerobic workout that include varying intensities of aerobic output and anaerobic intervals.” In other words, these classes, which can be modified based on your fitness level, will have you working hard during class and feeling great after. It is also so much fun, with different class themes and entertaining instructors.
PureBarre
If you hated ballet class as a child, don’t worry; PureBarre isn’t going to make you do any pirouettes. They have taken the isometric movements from the dance style and used them to create an enjoyable but challenging workout class. And you get to wear leg warmers!
DanceBody
This isn’t your mom’s Zumba class. DanceBody offers a multitude of comfortable and fun dance-based workouts with a great soundtrack. Our favorite part is that they emphasize the energy of community and having a support system to keep you motivated. This may be the perfect exercise family to join if you need extra motivation to get out of a slump.
Rumble Boxing
Ever want to feel like the hero of an action movie? Give Rumble Boxing a shot –to the punching bag, of course. These 45-minute workout classes help you learn the fundamentals of boxing while doing interval weight training and bouncing around to a curated list of hip-hop and house mash-ups. It’s a highly well-rounded workout that'll bring out the fighter in anyone.
