Dressing "Cool" But Professional at Work for the Summer
By: Emily Simmons
Outside of work hours, summer can be the best time of the year. Sunny days, increased sunlight, and a surplus of outdoor activities make every day exciting. Summer is when we see trips to the beach, parades and festivals, bonfires, and getaways to nature.
Summer is also, however, one of the most frustrating times in an office setting.
Living in New York City, you know the blazing temperatures are magnified with intense humidity, summer crowds, and stuffy subway stations. I find that half of the subways I take lack air conditioning and are filled with every resident in Manhattan. These hot temperatures are felt even more with strict corporate dress codes. Finding a balance between dressing cool while looking work-ready can be a hard balance to strike. If you are lacking inspiration, try these tips as you plan your wardrobe for the rest of the summer.
Linen and Cotton Materials Are a Must
Synthetic materials – think polyester, rayon, and spandex - have a tendency to trap heat. When shopping for summer apparel, search for items that are made of 100% cotton or linen. These natural fibers have a loose weave pattern that promotes airflow. Additionally, both fabrics absorb up to 25% of water before it feels wet, wicking moisture away from the body.
Tip: Linen sets are a trending summer outfit! These versatile sets can be worn casually after work or elevated with accessories to look stunning in a corporate office.
Style Tank Tops with Interesting Necklines
A tank top helps to reduce the amount of fabric touching particularly sweaty spots of your body. Solid print tanks with trousers and skirts. I love a high neck tank or body suit to cinch in the waist. Boat necks and mock turtlenecks can be a great transitional piece as well depending on the region of the country you live in.
Introduce Flowy Skirts, Dresses, and Pants into Your Wardrobe
I love how elegant a skirt or dress makes an outfit with minimal effort. The looser the fit, the more breathable your outfit will be as less fabric is directly touching the skin.
Across New York City, you can see many professional women wearing maxi skirts, wide linen trousers, and flowy skirts to beat the heat.
Try Some New Updo’s
If you are unable to refresh your wardrobe, the minimum you can do is pull your hair up. Keeping hair away from your face and neck will help reduce sweating, stuffiness, and frizz. Sick of slick-back buns? Nearly every social media platform offers tutorials and hair inspiration with braids, twists, and headbands.
Don’t Forget Your Trusty Cardigan
While your commute and day will consist of hot temperatures, it is likely the air conditioning in our office will be turned to its max setting. Bringing a light cardigan or sweater will add interest to your outfit and ensure you stay a comfortable temperature while working. Open cardigans, blazers, and button-down sweaters are great options!
With these tips in mind, getting ready for work each day should be a breeze (literally!) Stores to find great pieces include H&M, Abercrombie & Fitch, Aritzia, The Gap, and Mango. Good Luck!
