Navigating Post-Grad Imposter Thoughts
By: Gabriella Galland
Ever read a job description or get tasked with something new and think, “How could college possibly prepare me for this?” Welcome to the club.
Standing on the bridge between college and our first “real” job is uncomfortable, wondering if we’re cut out for this adult world. The good news? Everyone who’s ever started a new job or pursued a passion has felt those doubts. “Is this for me?” “Am I made for this?” “Can I do this?” Here are some things to do when you experience these thoughts.
Recognize Imposter Thoughts
First, recognize those thoughts for what they are. High achievers often experience these feelings. So, if you’re feeling like a fraud, it might just be your internalized pressures to excel and be the best.
Challenge Negative Self-Talk
If you feel like you’re not good enough, ask yourself what evidence you have to support that feeling. Remember, mistakes are part of growing. Trying and failing teach you more than never trying at all.
Restructure Your Thinking
Frustrated by the thought of not knowing how to do something? Change the narrative. Instead of letting fear of failure take over, focus on all the new things you can learn and the people you can connect with along the way. Stick with the mantra, “Learn it until you earn it.”
Acknowledge Your Wins
Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small. Since starting my career, mentors have told me to keep a digital folder of achievements and positive feedback. It’s a lifesaver on days when nothing seems to go right.
Manage Expectations
Perfectionism and internal pressure can fuel imposter syndrome. If you find yourself spending way too much time on a task, give yourself permission to step back and acknowledge the effort you’ve put in to finalize the task.
Exude Confidence and Competence
Lead with confidence, competence, and optimism. One trick I learned from a mentor is to curate a professional brand for myself. Every day, remind yourself that you’re capable to tackle anything. And don’t underestimate the power of a confidence-boosting outfit.
Let your frustration and fears drive you. When you feel stuck, push yourself to tackle something that scares you—it will be worth it. With the right mindset and understanding you can turn imposter thoughts into success.
