Songs the Ladies of Sex and the City Would Have on Their Playlists
By: Natalie DeVito
What songs do Samantha, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte live their lives by? Is Samantha living a BRAT summer? Perhaps Charlotte is at the opposite end listening to strictly classical music? Does Miranda even listen to music or are her ears strictly flooded with True Crime podcasts? Is Carrie in her Lana era as she thinks about Mr.Big? The list goes on. Find out what we think should go on this “Core Four’s” playlist.
Starting off strong, the answer is yes, Samantha is living a fully executed BRAT life. Songs fulfilling this BRAT life consist of:
Von dutch by Charli xcx
Little Red Corvette by Prince
Hot Stuff by Donna Summer
Marry The Night by Lady Gaga
More Than a Woman by the Bee Gees
Of course, these songs present a perfect culmination of the life Samantha leads. As the synopsis of brat states itself, Samantha is drawn to the “...trashy, sugary glitz of the club,” but also drawn to the playful and vibrant essence of her life that allows her to be her own independent and confident self. These songs may show up on Samantha's pre-game playlist, or come on later in the night at the club and Samantha will bask in the fact that she was ahead of the trend.
Moving on, Carrie has a little bit more of a mix to her playlist. Her music reflects the very relatable ups and downs we see her go through in each season…especially pertaining to Mr.Big. Nonetheless, here are the five songs filling Carries ears on repeat:
Drunk Girls by LCD Soundsystem
I’m Every Woman by Chaka Khan
Vogue by Madonna
Norman f******g Rockwell by Lana del Ray
I Fall in Love Too Easily by Chet Baker
A perfect mixture of chaos, these are songs Carrie can throw her curls and and thrash her body to on a night out with her curls or slowly sink into her bathtub with a bottle of wine. And in most scenarios, Carrie really does think she is every woman, contrary to that being true. These melodies fill her apartment when she’s up late at night writing her next piece for her “Sex and the City” column driving her to stay inspired and eventually leave her apartment to gather ‘research’ for said upcoming piece. For the hopeless yet pessimistic romantic inside of her, and for someone who writes about sex but knows very little about love, these songs put a little bit of sanity back into her.
And then comes Miranda. The answer to Miranda is also yes, she is most likely always listening to a podcast as she probably fears that nothing productive is getting done listening to music all the time. In true Miranda fashion, the five podcasts occupying her thoughts are:
NPR News Now
Dateline NBC
First Date Follow Up: The Jubal Show
Pod save America
The Guilty Feminist
Ranging from all things current events, feminism, and recent politics to true crime and a guilty pleasure radio show about first dates, Miranda fills her ears with the words of activists, experts, educators, politicians, women, and of course the average human looking for love. If Miranda were to listen to music, she’d perhaps listen to Fiona Apple, The Killers, or Alanis Morisette during a heated workout. And for other, more fun, instances she may listen to queer icons and musicians such as MUNA, Chappell Roan, and Brandi Carlisle.
Lastly, we enter Charlotte territory, filled with nothing but feel-good, sweet tunes. Charlotte cherishes classics and probably considers her music taste the perfectly curated playlist to her life, of course. Charlottes life consists of songs from:
Sparks Fly by Taylor Swift
Luck Be a Lady by Frank Sinatra
Head over Heels by The Go-Go’s
Uptown Girl by Billy Joel
Pas de deux from The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky
Although this may seem a bit all over the place, it wraps up the simple yet complex Charlotte we all know and love. We start off sweet with Taylor Swift and end with a rather emotional, and building piece of classical music, from none other than The Nutcracker, one of the most classic ballets known. This would, of course, inevitably be one of Charlotte's favorites during the holidays in NYC. On other days Charlotte is walking to her Upper East Side apartment trudging bags from recent shopping expenditures, to be her most authentic uptown girl, and perhaps get ready for a date later that night while listening to some Sinatra.
All this to say, compile these songs and you’ll have a concoction of Samantha, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte. There’s a little bit of us in every single one of these women, so be sure to listen to these compiled playlist and channel your inner Samantha, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte.
