The Pros and Cons of Dating Men in New York City

By: Kate Campion

Living in New York City is a dream come true. Being a young girl who moved to Manhattan in her late teens and is still here in her early twenties, you have a lot of stories, especially when it comes to dating. So many that one could probably make an entire magazine about it. While dating in NYC is a story itself, there are pros and cons that need to be talked about.

Let’s surface it without too much detail. When you’re out with all the single (hopefully) bachelors, you never know how old the guy who’s talking to you is. Chances are he’s also 10 years older than he says he is. The best tip you can get is to google him while you use the bathroom. You are way safer meeting someone on a dating app than in person these days.

On a dating app like Hinge, Raya, or Tinder, the man’s age is more accurate. Not to mention when they’re on dating apps, they usually don’t have a significant other that is just asking to be caught.

So overall, the con is easy. Men in New York are catfish. They are older than they say they are, probably have a girlfriend, and are typically douchebags. Finding a nice guy who’s also normal in New York is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Impossible. Once you do find someone and you perhaps stop talking, you will see them everywhere when you least expect it. The city is a lot smaller than we want it to be.

As for pros for dating in New York, there are endless restaurants you’ll be able to try. That’s the best way to eat at different spots. Your date is going to want to impress you and say somewhere you most likely haven’t been to before. You could eat out everyday if you said yes to all the dates and save yourself some money. However, you’re definitely not going to enjoy the company you are with all the time.

Living in New York is expensive, so most of the guys here are also hard workers which is a plus. In some cases where they’re not, they’re probably a trust fund kid, but still, they will be able to take care of you. You will also never find the same person twice, everyone is so different from each other which makes it a thrill.

Truth is you may end up finding your soulmate, but it will take you a lot longer than anywhere else. However, having a big and diverse selection in one of the world’s most iconic cities lets you decipher between what you do and don’t want. When you find that person, it’s worth it.
